Too Much Bling Is Not a Flattering Thing on Older Women

As a wardrobe stylist, I see women tempted by bling and challenged about what’s age appropriate in today’s fashions. Bling on the jeans seems to be a trend that is pushing some of our “butt”ons.

This relates to my theory on it is not so much about ‘what to wear, what not to wear’ as WHY are you wearing it and if the answer is, “because I feel good in it”, then I say flaunt it. Sometimes however, we become slaves to fashion because the trend is new and different, it looks cute on ‘her’— therefore you want the look or you just get pulled in because everybody else is wearing that particular style. I completely understand these feelings.

I am now in my 40’s and for the first time EVER, I have sometimes puzzled whether an outfit is appropriate or not. I definitely, definitely, definitely do not want to be that gal looking as though I am trying to be younger than I am by flashing age inappropriate bling. It happens the other way around too. I have met women who feel dowdy and I will concur and enthusiastically suggest they need not wear ‘that’ for at least another 30 years!

My suggestion to every woman is at each decade evaluate your wardrobe and hire a professional stylist (like me) to help you identify where you are at with your personal style; our lifestyles have probably changed, our bodies change and fashion styles will have certainly changed.
