Why Are American Women So Tired?
Sleep: The final frontier. Good sleep is the quest of every American woman who is a mother, lover, breadwinner, marathon runner, and homemaker. She’s added hats and delegated none so she’s bone tired.
About 60% of women, according to the 2007 Sleep in America poll, say women only get a few good nights’ sleep two nights a week or less. Another 67% of women experience sleep problems (anxiety, hot flashes, waking up a 3 AM which is often an indicator of your liver working overtime).
And even when tired and exhausted, women often push through their to-do list rather than going to bed. Does this sound like you? The hour before you crash you…
- watch television (87% of women)
- do the rest of your household chores (60% of women)
- play with your kids children (37%)
- do activities with other family (36%)
- surf the Internet (36%)
- work on your day job to-dos (21%)
Are You Tired or Do You Need a Vacation?
Here’s my non-medical suggestion. Book and take a vacation — be it a week or an extended weekend. Notice if you’re tired on vacation or if you suddenly have new-found energy. That will tell you a lot.
If you’re still tired on vacation, then it’s time to call your doctor and get a full female panel run on your hormones, adrenals, thyroid and whatever else he/she suggests.
Join me for my next post on the Ayurveda look at why women may be tired because some of doing exactly the opposite of what our body needs as we move into the Vata phase of life, according chiropractor and Ayurveda counselor, Dr. Sarah Kucera who runs Kansas Siddha Yoga in Kansas City, Missouri.
