How to Look Dishy Not Dumpy on Your Next Date
Any woman over 42 can look practically edible on a date even if she’s not JLo with her unlimited budget and $27 million ass (et). However, choose your attire with your eyes wide open, because it’s just as easy to look ridiculous if you wear an outfit meant for someone decades younger than you, which is practically all you’ll find when you search the web, flip through a magazine, or step into countless boutiques.
Skip the Blinding Bling and Bare-all Tops
Unless you go to great blogs like Midlife Mona Lisa, Flattering 50 or Fashion After 50 you’ll spend endless hours surfing for inspiration only to see six-inch spikes, mini dresses, bare-all tops, blinding bling, and bravado only worn by fashion victims, Sharon Stone, or cougars ready for prey.
During a recent closet edit with my fabulous stylist Jennifer Niehouse of It’s So U Wardrobe, we pillaged through the closet of a striking women over 50. This particular client has great style but like most of us a few unflattering pieces were still hanging in her closet.
If You’ve Got Great Legs, Show ‘Em
She modeled two of the no nos and one of the “hellos” below. As you’ll see she was (1) hiding her figure in dated Chico’s baggy black pants (2) hiding her great legs in long skirts and that embroidered sweater dated her by 15 years (3) she nailed it with this simple black and white ensemble that showcases her legs without going overboard and flatters her skin tone – which we determined is a winter season. Note her fabulous shoes that are stylish without being platform stilettos.
If you need classic inspiration, follow the styles of Meryl Streep or Diane Keaton — who always look stunning like she does in this green wrap dress.
And, here our a couple outfits I pinned on my Pinterest page that would look fab on any woman over 40 on date night or girl’s night out (minus the high, high heels).

Hey now… I kinda like ankle bracelets – even toe rings can be stylish (personal opinion only). I read today that Julia Roberts was sporting one at a recent movie promotional interview.
It’s a fine line according to my trusted stylist. They’re definitely an item of the past unless your a Tico and yogi or beatnik hanging around Venice Beach. What would you reaction be to a 50 or 60 or 70 year old woman flaunting a belly ring?
