Quit Digging Ruts in Your MidlIfe and Try a New Route

[ 2 ] June 19, 2012 |

Have you ever repeated something that didn’t work? Sometimes we need to quit going down the same path to find that shiny penny — new man, new job, new friend, new opportunity, new mentor, new path to wealth or happiness.

I confess over a 14 year period I broke away from a relationship with a man and returned five times. My wiser self would have told me to quit repeating after the second time, but we all have our journeys. If you’ve had a similar experience, or crisis, please tell me about it below. What cycle needs broken in your life? Are you on the right sidewalk?

This beautiful poem by Portia Nelson rings true to me, how about you? To me it captures the feeling of a midlife crisis so well – being lost, helpless, digging out. Enjoy.

midlife crisis, starting over, divorce, separation, starting anew

To find change (life’s rewards), make a change in your route (your life).

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

by Portia Nelson

Chapter 1

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.

I am lost … I am helpless.

It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it is there.

I still fall in … it’s a habit.

My eyes are open.

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Chapter 4

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter 5

I walk down another street.

It can be terribly hard to break away from a toxic relationship for many different reasons. I left the same man 4 times in 10 years. We aren’t officially divorced yet, so technically we have now been married 31 years!!
It isn’t something someone should feel bad about. Sometimes the journey is longer for some than others!! :)

    • So true Cynthia. Everyone comes in our lives for a reason or season or lifetime. It’s our job to stay in tune with our needs to make sure we hear or see or feel if their job has been completed. Because in my opinion some people are clueless and will just stick around because their needs are being met just fine, but lopsided relationships usually run their course. Thanks for sharing.
