Which Movie Best Describes Your Marriage?

[ 0 ] July 1, 2012 |

If you’ve made it down the aisle once, are you living happily ever after with him or her? Did you marry a man who makes you giddy and as happy as Julia Child with her husband Paul? Or did you marry a loser that leaves you feeling trapped like Jennifer Aniston’s character in The Good Girl.

Of course there other types of marriages — marry for money or marry for the sex. Or pass on the groom altogether and marry a woman. Have I hit home with your marriage yet? Wait I’m not done.

In the 60s if you weren’t married by the age of 25, you were considered a freak. Today if you’ve been married just once by the age of 60, you’re an oddity. So let’s compare notes by voting on which one of the seven movies below best sums up your marriage in midlife. Please complete the poll at the end so my voyeur needs get met this month.

1.  The Perfect Marriage– Julia & Julia

Julia and Paul Child Had a Near Perfect Marriage

Paul Child adored his wife Julia and not only supported her but often worked beside her in all her endeavors. The Child’s were determined to maintain what Julia called “that lovely intertwining of life, mind, and soul that a good marriage is.”

“We are a team,” she often said. “We do everything together.”

Are you fortunate enough to be doing what you love and living with the spouse of your dreams? If so, bon appetite.

2.  The Kept Woman – The Stepford Wives

Are you living a life of luxury with country club memberships, Pilates classes, cocktails at 5, spa treatments all while  looking fantastic and never letting on how empty you really feel. Does your life parallel Nicole Kidman’s in Stepford, Connecticut where the men have figured out how to program their wives to be perfect in all ways?  Nicole’s character learns that the pert wives in Stepford are blissful but doomed.

Is your life rich but empty?

3.  You Married Your Best Friend – When Harry Met Sally

A Nora Ephron masterpiece: When Harry Met Sally

Is your husband your best friend? Or did you despise him in the beginning just like Sally did when she first met blow-hard Harry in his younger days?  Marrying someone who begins as a great friend promises a longer shelf life than marrying someone who you starting dating because of physical sparks.

4.   Your Marriage is Your Worst Nightmare – The Good  Girl

There’s no connection, no conversations, no future,  just emptiness. Jennifer Aniston wants to blink her eyes and disappear in her role as Justine who works at Rodeo Retail and goes home to her husband who just wants to smoke pot and live small. Did your marry a person who hasn’t grown up or grown with you?

5.  Abandoned for a Younger Woman – Waiting to Exhale

If you’ve invested more than a decade, or two or three, in your husband who then decides to leave you for a younger woman, you can no doubt relate to Angela Bassett’s character in Waiting to Exhale who sets her husband’s car on fire. Or perhaps to Savannah, who is played by Whitney Houston, who tires of waiting for the man of his dreams to leave his wife for her. Click Waiting to Exhale in the poll below, if you were burned by your husband after a lengthy marriage or if you got burned playing with fire like Savannah.

6.  In a Rut & In a Midlife Crisis – American Beauty

Lester and Carolyn Burnham have drifted into their own separate worlds where too much of its is spent lusting after other people. They are asleep at the wheel and need to wake-up. Lester revolts by quitting his job and Carolyn presses forward still seeking control by pressing for the illusion of perfection.

Vote for American Beauty if you’re in a marriage of disconnect, infidelity, or midlife crisis.

7.    You’re in a Non-Traditional Marriage – The Kids Are All Right

Lesbian marriages were preferred by 2 million women in 2000.

Are you partnered with or married to a great woman like Annette Bening hitched to Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right? Living in union with another woman is on the rise. Nearly 2 million lesbian couples are living as partnered couples according to the 2000 Census.

A woman in her late 90s provided a quick answer when asked about her good health and long life. She said, “No meat and no men.”

If you’re marriage is vegan, vote for The Kids Are All Right as your movie choice most closely mirroring your love life.

Don’t leave yet. Vote on which of the seven movies below best shadows your marriage OR write in one I missed.
