Hope Springs is Painfully Poignant.
If you haven’t seen Hope Springs, bring tissues. You’ll laugh, weep, and if you’re an emotional sponge like me, leave feeling wiped but inspired.
Kay (Meryl Strep) fights to resuscitate her morgue-like marriage of 31-years with Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) who has slept in the spare bedroom for five years. They don’t touch, they don’t talk, and they don’t put the pickle in the jar. Kay is so repressed her only fantasy could be played on the Disney channel, and not surprisingly, it doesn’t involve sex.
Enter Dr. Feld (Steve Carrell) to break open their wounds so some new skin can begin growing that actually desires touch. Feld makes them speak words they’ve never spoken, but neither Kay nor Arnold can man up to spit out the word blow job.
The best scene of the movie is when Kay drops to her knees determined to defibrillate her marriage. Not even crusty, pessimistic Arnold can roll his eyes to such an erotic effort from Kay who has the courage to put her money and her mouth where it counts most. On her marriage.
