Death by Brain Fog
Have you ever hit the alarm button instantly knowing that you were going to stumble through the day plagued by brain fog?

It’s hard to be on top of your game when you’re operating behind brain fog so thick you could meet Jack the Ripper.
I do at least weekly being because of peri-menopause. Last week I had to get one of my cats to the vet at 8 AM. Because of brain fog that one simple errand was like biking the Tour de France.
My movements and mind wadded through mud in slow motion. Get the carrier. Carry the cat to car. Put the car in reverse. Try not to back into the neighbor’s car. Stay in your lane.
In route to the vet, I knew I was in trouble. Cars whizzed by me. I looked at my odometer and I was only driving 40 miles an hour on the highway, which was quite comfortable in my state of mind. But the 20-minute journey there seemed like hours.
I arrived and the vet to got the pills down him to stop the parasites. When I finally arrived home, my cat vomited up the pills, which was a sign to go back to bed, which of course I couldn’t.
I asked Jen Denslow, my yoga instructor at Sage Yoga Center for Healing arts who teaches aromatherapy classes and is also an herbalist, for some brain fog busting answers. Watch the 2.5 minute video below to hear why she recommends Rosemary, Lemon and Frankincense oils.
I hob nob with a lot of midlife bloggers but have yet to meet Nina Price. Nina blogs at Midlife Without Crisis and offers this terrific answer to the reason for midlife brain fog.
Question
I seem to live in a perpetual fog, like I can’t think clearly or I’m not all the way there. Why do I have brain fog?
Answer
Brain fog is a sign of brain inflammation. Although inflammation in the brain doesn’t cause pain, it can cause symptoms of brain fog.
The brain is protected by a thin lining called the blood-brain barrier, which allows nano-sized compounds in or out of the brain as appropriate. However the blood-brain barrier can become “leaky,” just as the gut barrier can. This allows large particles into the brain that don’t belong there. These invaders trigger the brain’s immune system and cause inflammation.
It’s funny how everything comes full circle in life. I’m currently documenting the 90-day journey of 50 women who are giving up grain to eliminate weight gain and brain fog in life through exercise and Paleo diet program at Pilates 1901.
I’m going to check in with these ladies Saturday to see how they are feeling after 10 days of no grains and sugars to see if they are living fog free or ready still experiencing withdrawals. Stay tuned.

My solution for brain fog? A diet strong on lean meats and lots of vegetables, Topped off with 1 1/2 glasses of red wine. I sleep great and after some stretching and a shower in the morning, I’m ready to go! I should exercise more, but that is mainly confined to the weekend.
Hurrah for your life and self care Ms. Laurel. Love the red wine in the mix. I’m so happy for you manifesting your storybook beginning/ending whatever you want to call it, but you nailed it and are the prototype for other women to follow whether you realize it or not.
