My Secrets to Living a Bubbly, Rocking Midlife
When I reached midlife, no one handed me a secret badge of honor for surviving low self-esteem, clinical depression, abandonment, and inherited negative thinking.
Two years ago one of my counselors told me it was amazing in itself that I had achieved so much greatness in my life giving my history and coming from a family plagued with mental malfunctions. (Is any of this ringing true for you?)
Flash forward to yesterday when a friend of mine of 25 years told me that I’m the happiest she’s ever seen me ever. She told me to never lose what I’ve found to make me this way. What an endorsement of the path I’ve been on for one and half years.
My Secret Sauce to Arriving at My Happy Spot
If you stay with me and read my advice below, you’ll have reaped the reward of my reading more than 250 self-help books over the past two decades and attending countless hours with professional coaches and counselors. (Your welcome).
Use Your Journal to Write Your Ticket
I’ve journaled since elementary school but didn’t start using it as my secret weapon until Joe Stumpf, mega real estate coach, taught me how to write in future tense. So rather than using it to write about your woes, I use my journal to record my gratitude and to write what I see in the near future coming into my life. Grab a copy of Write it Down, Make it Happen and you’ll get the gist quick.
Remove the Hell and Damnation
I was raised Lutheran and went to the Church of Christ for three years with my high school sweetheart. Both churches brought more fear into my life than good. Our religious beliefs are probably different, but my point it find a spiritual home that lifts you up without deviating from what you believe. I did and it turned my world around.
Realize the Quest for Being No. 1 is for Losers
For years my competitive streak agitated my reality and left me in a constant state of disappointment. Always wanting to be bigger, faster, higher, leaves you exhausted and insatiable. Really, unless you’re a TV network, what’s so important about being No. 1? Repeat after Maya Angelou, “You alone are enough…You have nothing to prove to anybody.”
Read Daily Love Notes
One of the best things you can do for yourself right now for free, is to go to Tut and sign up for notes from the Universe. Mike Dooley the author of these thoughtful notes you’ll look forward to receiving is a genius.
Love Your Life
Forgive your past and those in it and embrace the now. So hard, but so necessary for your happiness today. Say a prayer of gratitude every night before you go to bed for all you have. It will shift your focus from the not so good to what’s great in your life and make it multiply. And, add to your daily affirmations, “I love my life!” “I love myself.”
Lend a Hand
I have been self-centered and self-serving and as a result miserable. Today I constantly put myself in someone else’s shoes and try to feel what someone else is feeling. Pull a Shirley MacLaine and get out of your body and out of your “head” and into someone’s life and heart to make a difference. A good rule of thumb is to volunteer 10% of your forty-hour workweek or 4 hours weekly to a good cause be it helping a person move, working in a shelter or being a Big Sister, which I highly recommend. And don’t forget to share the wealth, by tithing to your church or an organization you create a flow of support that only comes back to you three-fold in your life
Affirm It
At the end of every yoga class after saying Namaste, I bow and say, “I am the point the Universe is trying to make.” I learned this from my bunk mate at a yoga retreat in Costa Rica and for me it puts me in a mind frame that I have important work to do in this world and the world is going to back me in doing just that.
You of course can write your own or try a few of my other favorites, which include (1) All that I need shows up to support my work (2) I have wonderful gifts to give and I give graciously (3) There is enough for everyone (4) Everything is in Divine order just as it should.
So those are the jewels that have freed me from years of mental anguish. I hope if you implement them into your life, you too will feel a shift so great you’ll embrace every day, one great day at a time.
Namaste.
You are the point the Universe is trying to make.

Thanks for sharing. It should really lift people up!
Thanks Deb, I oh you some Cafe Gratitude.
So true. We, alone, live our lives. I do believe in seeing things happen in our minds and it most often comes true.
Yes Janie, our minds are our steering wheels to happiness and our desires. Wish I would have gotten my “mind” permit earlier than 50
“Always wanting to be bigger, faster, higher, leaves you exhausted and insatiable.” This point resonated with me. I see so many people trying to fill the hole in their life with achievements and it just DOESNT. For me, my relationship with God fills that hole and I need no other.
Amen Shelley. Everything seems to come full circle in life. I was immensely religious growing up. Lost it. Found it again and I agree, life is so much richer and all fulfilling with God in it. He’s my man, too.
Ahhh…my yoga teacher said this in class recently and it so resonated:
“You are the point the Universe is trying to make.”
Good advice you have here!
I so agree with you and had to smile about all the self-help books you’ve read. I’ve read a few to many myself and one day I realized a question which answered it’s self. Q: What are you really telling the Universe by reading all these self help books.
A: I’m broken
I decided not to be broken but to be happy and love myself and it worked. I REALLY loved this post. Thanks for sharing.
Love this advice. I’m going to have to try to remember an live it.
Thanks for sharing such good tips. Sometimes a boost of tips helps!
Thanks for reading this post and sharing your thoughts. I’ve noticed women supporting and sharing in numbers too big to ignore as of late. Love it.
