Like a Virgin, Embrace the Beauty of Your Natural Gray Hair
Uncolored, virgin, natural hair color is in vogue. With the right cut, it’s a fashion statement and it saves you time, money and chemical overload.
However if you, like me, have been coloring your hair since Sun In maimed so many in college, follow these steps to get back to your natural color. You’re not alone. An estimate 70% of consumers use hair color to cover up their gray.

KC silver fox Jaylynn Fourtney calls herself a feminist. She quit coloring her gray hair around 2004 because she feels if men can go gray and be called sexy so can women. So true.
The Cost of Covering Gray
On the low end, covering your gray can cost $75 a salon visit every five weeks or $750 a year. On the high end or in bigger cities, a woman can spend as much as $150 every three weeks which adds up to $52,000 over her lifetime if she starts in her 40s.
That’s a huge wallop of cash you could buy silver with, save, or spend on more memorable extravaganzas than sitting in a salon chair for two to four hours a month. Heck maybe you could own a piece of the Virgin Isles for that money.
I love men and women who strut their salt and pepper hair with full abandon. Silver headed boomers stand out in a crowd of blonde, brunettes, and redheads. Winnie Dunn demonstrates this air and style below. Winnie is both beautiful and brilliant professionally. She has a degree in neuroscience and is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy Education at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Winnie’s hair and heart shines at Unity Temple on the Plaza. Imagine never once coloring your hair like Winnie. Oh the savings.
“I’ve never colored my hair. Even when I was a brunette I still had these permanent gray sprigs sticking up near my forehead. My associates called them my neuron antennas,” laughs Winnie Dunn.
Like Winnie, stunning gray foxes or foxettes seem to have a renegade spirit about them and fashion moxie to boot. Check out the grace and presence of Kansas City senior model, Jane Snowden, who I bumped into at Latteland after her morning workout and she looked camera ready.
And I would be remiss not to mention these two silver haired foxettes and my favorite happy hour buddies and friends, the fabulous Weston, Mo. artist Marie Mason and retiree Alieta Bensen.

I agree they are all stunning..I just don’t think I will be going there soon.
The women pictured are lovely. They look beautiful. I, however, am not quite convinced it’s time to let my dingy gray shine.
I love these beautiful women, but on me,it’s just aging. Of course, once it’s no longer salt and pepper it might be a different story!
I too still prefer to highlight my hair but I admire these women for breaking free from the two hours a month in a chair and the expense.
I can’t do it. I know I spend too much time and money on my hair, but I won’t give in.
I guess it depends on the person… I think the women above look great…
Good point. I think if the woman feels a slave to being tied in a chair 2 hours a month, she should let it go like Jaylynn did. Kind of like burning your bra.
